Security and protection against fraudulent transactions are a key concern for merchant's accepting credit card payments online. Unlike face to face transactions, online transactions are more difficult to validate because the cardholder is not present. There is no physical receipt to sign or PIN number entered to validate the cardholder is the authorised user of the card.
MasterCard SecureCode and Visa's Verified by Visa (VbV) are two initiatives designed to verify the identity of the cardholder for online purchases and assist merchants minimise their exposure to fraud.
How do SecureCode and VbV work?
Visa and MasterCard cardholder's must register for SecureCode or VbV with their bank. Once registered, cardholders establish their own password to authenticate their identity when making online purchases.
When a cardholder proceeds to an online ‘check out' an additional window pops up requesting them to enter their unique personal code (their SecureCode or VbV password) that has been registered with their bank. The cardholder's bank authenticates the cardholder is the legitimate purchaser.
SecureCode and VbV are features available for ANZ eGate merchants who choose to use either the Server Hosted or the Merchant Hosted + Authentication implementation options.
